James A. Woods-Inventor

James A. Woods was the second of nine children born in Alamo, GA. After completing middle school, he moved to Savannah, Georgia to live with his grandparents. His mother felt that it would be advantageous to send him to a larger area so that his athletic potential would be exposed.

While in the 10th grade at Sol C. Johnson High School, the coaches (John Myles, Floyd Morris and Otis Brock) could see that he had good athletic abilities and encouraged him to try out for football and track. He was the first junior in Savannah to win 1st place in the 100 yd. dash for Class AA schools in the state of Georgia. In his senior year, he won 1st place in the 220 yd. dash. His great athletic ability and hard work resulted in him receiving a full Football and Track scholarship to Savannah State University.

In 1966, Savannah State University won the SEAC Track and Field Championship. James scored 64 points in this track meet and was voted most outstanding athlete because of the following accomplishments:

1st Place – 100 yd. Dash; Time 9.5 sec./10.4 meters

1st Place – 220 yd. Dash; Time 21.9 sec.

1st Place – (Team) 440 yd. Relay

1st Place – (Team) 880 yd. Relay

2nd Place – (Team) Mile Relay

His college education was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served 19 months in Vietnam, receiving Overseas Medal, Combat Medal and American Service Plague. After his tour of active duty, he returned to Savannah State University to complete his degree in Health and Physical Education.

Mr. James Woods would like to give a special “thank you” to Head Coach Richard Washington for his guidance and support while at Savannah State University.

Mr. Woods retired from teaching after 26 years in the Georgia School System and from the U.S. Army as First Lieutenant. During a U.S. Army assignment in Egypt, he became fascinated with the pyramids and the legends behind them. It occurred to him that the pyramid concept could be utilized to create a fun strategic board game. Intrigued by this idea, he began designing just such a board. The “Woods Pyramid Game” was the result of his brainstorming. The “Woods Pyramid Game” while in development has been played by kids of all ages. The “Woods Pyramid Game” has been in play since 2005.

Mr. James A Woods has a wife, Clara, 2 sons, 4 daughters and 2 granddaughters. Mr. Woods current resides in Conyers, Georgia. For appearance information and to challenge Mr. Woods playing the “Woods Pyramid Game” please call 770-922-7069 or e-mail him at
